The gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in shaping the host immune system and maintaining immune homeostasis. Emerging evidence reveals its critical involvement in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease. This article reviews current understanding of gut microbiota-mediated modulation of immune responses, explores mechanisms linking microbial dysbiosis to autoimmunity, and discusses therapeutic potential through microbiome-targeted interventions. The complex interplay between gut microbes and host immune cells offers promising avenues for developing novel diagnostic and treatment strategies for autoimmune disorders prevalent in Pakistan and globally.
